The real olympics

July 31, 2008

Forget Beijing and the fact the athletes have got to contend with a bit of smog, down in Hackney you’ve got kids with guns and burnt out motorbikes to negotiate. The real deal is happening at The Hackney Bumps, a 70’s era skatespot in London that is still going. The Hackney Olympics takes place on August 9th and to some it all up here is a quote from the web site:

“Some people still claim that they can’t find HACKNEY BUMPS. I find this remarkable. Some people also claim that you will get killed when you go to HACKNEY BUMPS. That is not really true, though the kids that burnt the vespa and the (motor)bikes on the photos above DID have REAL guns, though they could not care less about the skateboarders…”

He was a skater-boi

July 31, 2008

If like me, you were a skater in the late 80’s early 90’s. And watching clips of old Bones Brigade or Santa Cruz films on You Tube isn’t fulfilling your appetite for the good ol’ days enough. Check out this site “When we was rad“. It’s like stepping back in time and its amazing how many articles of RAD magazine I have seared into my brain.

Run rabbit run

Ryohei Hase is the illustrator/artist based in Tokyo who made this nice bit of work. Sadly most of his other paintings look like the sort of thing that you would find on the cover of those dreadful sci-fi books. But occasionally their are strokes of genius. Check it out here.

Roll back the years

This beautiful Rolleiflex camera, based on a 1920s design from German camera maker Rollei, might look like an antique but it’s actually a fully working 5MP digital camera. Nice.

Sesame is so street

Bert and Ernie go all gangsta rap on us. Genius.

Rush hour?

July 24, 2008

Apparently, this is an LA freeway this morning. And you thought your journey to work was bad.

Goodbye cameras, hello lazers

July 24, 2008

Ever pushing the boundaries of what is possible, Radioheads new video for House of Cards was filmed entirely without cameras or lights. Instead two technologies were used to capture 3D images: Geometric Informatics and Velodyne LIDAR. These hi-tes scanning systems produce structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity, then the Velodyne Lidar system captures large environments such as landscapes thru more spinning laser craziness. If that’s not enough for you, you can find out more here.
